Touchscreen technology has come a very long way. It used to be very unreliable and very unpredictable. It used to be that accidentally putting two fingers on the screen would confuse it, and it would often break if you were a little too rough with it. Then all of a sudden the technology is upgraded and has shrunk and now appears on Smartphones and tablets across the country. Now, more and more touch screen mobile devices are appearing and their sales are not slowing down.

Here is when touch screens became popular and usable

The first iPhone that was launched in 2007 was the device that really made touch screens popular. The button interface was found to be too small and too restrictive, and people loved that they could press a symbol on a screen and navigate to the place where they needed to be. Devices such as the Blackberry were popular, but non-business users were not willing to fiddle with it in order to use it every day.

Touchscreen technology has advanced quickly though 2007 to 2012

Touch screen technology going from 2007 to 2012 was operated in a number of ways. You could use a stylus pen such as with the Nintendo DS, or you could use your fingers such as with the iPhone. But then in 2012 the Windows 8 device made it so that mechanical and touch screen input could be used seamlessly. Microsoft created the Windows Microsoft Surface. This is a mixture of a laptop and a tablet. They made it so that you can use your mobile device as a tablet, or you can use it as a laptop, and you can switch between the two with ease.

Will touch screen PCs ever be as popular as touch screen tablets?

Touchscreen PCs have not yet taken off for the simple fact that require people to be close to the screen, and unlike with laptops, most people are unwilling to be close to the screen. A touch screen laptop is not feasible because people will have to take their hands off of their keyboard (which they hate).

Adaptive operating systems may help improve touch screen use

Canonical have now announced that they are going to produce Ubuntu. This is an operating system that was developed from Debian Linux distro. Their idea is to have an operating system that adapts to the device that it is on. Most operating systems are created so that they can switch inputs from one to another, but this operating system will simply adapt to the device it is on.

Mobile websites may be a thing of the past

The next inevitable stage of touch screen technology will surely come with our desire to surf the internet with our mobile devices. Mobile websites are stripped down desktop websites that have been optimised for touch screen. The day will surely come when the touch screen controls are as precise as a mouse pointer, but without using a stylus. When this day comes then touch screen technology may pose the biggest threat to desktop computers than ever before.
