Twitter social media users are still far short of the predicted 1 billion. Digital advertising consultancy firm eMarketer predicts that Twitter will have less than 400 million global users in 2018, mostly in Asia, America Latin, and the Middle East.

The eMarketer study projecting the growth of Twitter users will experience saturation in developed markets in the next five years. In 2018, the growth of Twitter users in the United States and Japan will decline, respectively 6.4 percent and 6.1 percent. Meanwhile, the number of users reached 386.9 million global only.

However, Twitter has great potential in developing countries with the largest growth in Asia. India and Indonesia will occupy the third and fourth ranked as the country with the largest number of Twitter users.

EMarketer study assesses the growth of Twitter users in India could reach 60 percent in 2014 due to the 140 character social media played an important role as a tool of the general election campaign.

Twitter does not have a large user base in China because the local authorities banned its use. Facebook also banned by the Chinese Government. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo had met in March to visit some local government officials, but according to some reports, the local government does not perceive important Costolo visit.

Twitter is still grappling with a stagnant user growth in the last two quarters. Average monthly active users reached 255 million at March 31, 2014, up 25 percent from year to year.
